Omega 3 to Omega 6 Imbalance and Its Effects on Skin Conditions

A girl with a healthy skinThe importance of both omega 6 and omega 3 fats for our health is a widely discussed topic. Both these fats affect your body as a whole, which means that they influence not only your general wellbeing but your appearance as well. However, few girls understand how important the balance between these two kinds of fatty acids is.

In order to stay healthy, we need both omega 3 and omega 6 fats. They are called essential fatty acids for they are necessary in order to provide protection to your cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, and immune systems. They are also responsible for insulating your nerves and producing molecular “messengers” that allow your brain to receive and send impulses through neurons.

The problem with these fats is the fact that omega 6 fats have a “bad” effect on you. They promote inflammation, which can cause numerous health problems. In regards to your appearance, it leads to acne breakouts and other issues that can be caused by infections. The inflammation weakens your body as a whole, starting with the immune system. Therefore, it makes you more vulnerable to the bacteria floating around and aggravates any skin conditions you might already have.

Omega 3 fats have an opposite effect and stop the inflammatory processes from getting out of control. As both types of fats are essential for your overall health, the trick is finding the balance between the two.

Sources of Essential Fatty Acids

You can obtain both types of fatty acids through the food you consume. The best sources of omega 6 fats are plant oils while omega 3 can be found in fatty fish (sardines, salmon, mackerel, etc.), flax seeds, and walnuts.

Maintaining a healthy diet will ensure that you get both of these elements. But will this be enough?

Unfortunately, in the vast majority of cases, even a well-balanced diet cannot provide you with proper amounts of fatty acids necessary to maintain the required balance. The reason for this is the fact that a typical American diet is packed with omega 6 fats. They are literally everywhere, so there is no avoiding the fact that your intake of these fatty acids will exceed that of omega 3 greatly.

This isn’t a bad thing to a certain point because the healthy ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is about 4:1 according to various research studies. However, on average, the ratio we end up with is closer to 30:1. As you can see, this is very far from healthy, so it’s really little wonder when your skin gets covered with pimples for no obvious reason. In many cases, this is caused by the inflammation blooming inside your body.

Unlike with infections, taking antibiotics or similar drugs won’t help you get rid of this particular problem. The only way to solve it is to increase your intake of omega 3 to reach the necessary balance. It’s impossible to do this through food alone, so you will need to get some additional help.
